Handling an external database

Overview
WinDev, WebDev and WinDev Mobile allow you to easily handle an external database (Oracle, SQL Server, Access, ...) by using the WLanguage functions.

To handle an external database, you must:

  1. Import the files (or tables) from the external database into the analysis. During this import, the data can be:
  2. Generate the analysis.
  3. Handle the imported data files via the WLanguage functions. See Accessing the databases for more details.
Note: You also have the ability to convert the data found in a data file with WDConver. To perform this operation, the description of the data file must have been imported into the analysis.

Note: From version 19, HFSQL is the new name of HyperFileSQL.

How do I import a description of a data file coming from an external database?
You have the ability to:
  • Import a data file from an external database into an analysis in HFSQL Classic format.
  • Import a data file in Hyper File 5.x or 4.x format into an analysis in HFSQL Classic format.
  • Import a data file in HFSQL Classic format into a new analysis in HFSQL Classic format.

Converting a data file (or table) found in an external database to a HFSQL data file

To perform an import from:You must own:

Importing a data file into an analysis

To import a data file into an analysis:
  1. In the data model editor, open the analysis where the import must be performed.
  2. Select "File structure .. Import the descriptions of files/tables". The wizard for importing the data files starts.On the "数据模型" pane, in the "创建" group, expand "导入" and select "Import the descriptions of files/tables". The wizard for importing the data files starts.
  3. Select the requested data source.
  4. Specify whether the data found in the data source must be:
    • stored in its current format. No conversion is required.
    • converted to HFSQL Classic format.
    If you want to import an external database:
    • For the data sources that use a native access, a connection to the external database is automatically established and associated with the data files imported into the analysis. This connection will be used to handle the data file by programming.
    • Specify the parameters of the connection if necessary: data server, user and password, database, connection name, ...
    • Specify the mode for accessing the data. You can:
      • access the data in its current format. Only the description of tables is imported into the analysis. No conversion is required.
      • convert the data to the HFSQL Classic format.
    • Select the tables (files) to import.
  5. If you want to import an external database:
    • Select the source database to import (".XLS" file for Excel, ".MDB" file for Access, name or alias of the server for Oracle or SQL Server) and the type of the database.
    • Specify (if necessary) the parameters of the data source (user name, password, ...).
    • Select the tables (files) to import.
    If you want to import HFSQL Classic data files:
    • Select the data file (.FIC extension) in HFSQL Classic format that must be retrieved.
    • Specify the password of this data file if necessary.
  6. If you want to import Hyper File 5.5 data files:
    • Select the WinDev 5.5 analysis (".WDD" file) containing the structure of the data files to convert.
    • Specify (if necessary) the password of this analysis at run time.
      Caution: the "WD5" directory corresponding to the WinDev 5.5 analysis must be found on the computer.
    • Select the data files that must be imported into the synchronization wizard.
    Validate the import. The current analysis is automatically generated.
  7. If you want to import HFSQL Classic data files:
    • Select the data file (.FIC extension) in HFSQL Classic format that must be retrieved.
    • Specify the password of this data file if necessary.
    If the data must be converted to HFSQL Classic format:
    • Specify the creation directory of HFSQL Classic data files.
    • Save (if necessary) the description of the conversion (script). This backup creates a ".WDV" file in the specified directory. This script can be re-used by WDConver.
    • Validate the data conversion.
  1. Validate the import. The current analysis is automatically generated.
  1. If the data must be converted to HFSQL Classic format:
    • Specify the creation directory of HFSQL Classic data files.
    • Save (if necessary) the description of the conversion (script). This backup creates a ".WDV" file in the specified directory. This script can be re-used by WDConver.
    • Validate the data conversion.

Note: From version 19, you can no longer import Hyper File 5.5 data files. This import can be performed with WinDev/WebDev 18 (or earlier).
