Overview
In the data model editor, the main operations that can be performed on an item are as follows:

Creating an item
To create an item:
  1. Double-click the data file in which the item must be created. The description window of the file items is displayed.
  2. Click the first empty row in the table of items or click.
  3. Specify the name, the caption, the size and the type of the item directly in the table.
Note: See The different types of items for more details.
  4. In the right part of the screen, specify the details about the new item (type of key, search direction, format...).
  5. Validate the description of the item.
Note: See the context-sensitive help of the description window for more details ().

Handling an item

Duplicating/Copying an item

When creating an item whose name is identical to the name of an existing item, WinDev, WebDev and WinDev Mobile automatically propose to use the description of the source item.

Deleting an item

To delete an item:
  1. Select the item to delete in the description of the items found in a data file.
  2. Click. The item is automatically deleted from the data file.
Note: When creating an item whose name is identical to the name of an item that was previously deleted, WinDev, WebDev and WinDev Mobile automatically propose to restore the description of the deleted item.

Renaming an item

To rename an item:
  1. Select the item to rename in the description of the items found in a data file.
  2. Enter the new name of the item.
  3. Validate the modification. The item is automatically renamed.

Using a dictionary

An item can be included in a dictionary in order to be re-used in a new application for example. Including the item in a dictionary is performed by Drag and Drop from the data model editor to the dictionary (displayed in the "Dictionary" pane).

When it is included in a dictionary, the item description can subscribe to the modifications. Any modification performed in the item description will be applied to the dictionary object and to all the uses of this object.

See Dictionary for more details.
